Deafened in Denia

Not to be outdone by their big city cousins in Valencia, in March the humble citizens of Denia also like to make a few bangs and have a good burning. Around this part of the world, anytime is a good time for a party. So, it's out with the firecrackers and the paint, open a few bottles and get on down with musica, comidas y cenas populares and a daily mascletaes (rockets and fireworks show) in the Plaza Whatever.

rsanken and the "Cremà" or burning of bonfires on St. Joseph's night.

Port Rotes, down the sea end of the main street through Denia, the Marques de Campo.

All familiar local characters (wot?)

And here's a general view, also showing the kiddie-winkies one in the foreground.

Here's some young Falleras resplendent in their finery.

Centro Monument Falles down the other end of the Marques de Campo.

Detail. It is difficult to follow the theme; I think that this one was a morality tale, if you spend your time lying on the floor and looking up ladies dresses then you will have your willy chopped off. Quite so.

I say, some of these monuments are quite risque. Those of a delicate disposition should look away now.

Crowds gather part one

Crowds gather part 2.

Firecrackers line the park.

And more lurk, hidden amongst the trees.

Weapons of mass destruction.

Open fire!

The banging and pounding continues for several minutes and the plaza is shrouded in white smoke. Quite pointless, rather silly and absolutely bloody brilliant.

Wot!

Aftermath part one. Spent WMD in the park.

Aftermath part two. Ignore the clouds of smoke and get on with the serious business of organising lunch.
